Cat & Dog Fun Facts

Did you know?

DOGS ARE NOT COLOURBLIND.
It is a myth that dogs see a black and white world. Dogs see in colour, but not the same way that we do. Veterinary ophthalmologists have determined that dogs are similar to people with red/green colour blindness, so they can see bluish and greenish shades but not reddish ones. To a dog, a bright orange ball on a grassy lawn appears as a light greenish ball in greenish grass. Go fetch!

OLD DOGS CAN LEARN NEW TRICKS.

With patience and understanding you can teach an old dog new tricks depending on what you are trying to teach the dog – or unteach the dog, which is usually more difficult. Like humans, dogs can learn at any age – it’s just old habits that are hard to break!

ALL SHOOK UP.

Cats can predict earthquakes. Felines have been reported to act strangely- yowling, running around and scratching doors hours before major earthquakes have hit. It is thought that they may feel early faint vibrations or sense the increase of static electricity that occurs when an earthquake is coming.

CATS ARE MOTIVATED BY FOOD, NOT PRAISE.
Unlike dogs, it is not enough for a cat to learn tricks to win your approval. Cats can be taught to perform tasks such as retrieving toys and jumping through hoops- but it may take patience and perseverance, and require many very yummy treats for your feline.

THE WET NOSE KNOWS.
Dogs’ noses have about four times as many scent cells as cats and 14 times more than humans’. That’s why dogs are frequently used to sniff out allergy causing mold, termites, illegal drugs and missing persons. They can also smell their dinner from anywhere in the house!
